Here, Not There
I had no idea what my blogs were going to turn into when I first started writing them. I just started to turn a lot of my personal journal entries into reflections to share with an audience, with you. I literally call them Notes from Within because that’s exactly what they are. They’re my daily struggles, reflections, realizations, the things that move through me and want to be witnessed.
Do I throw some mental health education in there? Of course I do. But mental health education doesn’t always look like textbook definitions. Sometimes it looks like sharing the truth about my own inner world. I hope that through reading my struggles, reflections, and the ways I’m learning myself, you find your own openings; your own moments of growth tucked somewhere inside these words.
With that being said, I found myself recently meditating and journaling simultaneously. And no… meditation doesn’t always mean sitting up straight, cross legged, eyes closed. I found myself journaling about how much gratitude I have for what I do; for the space I hold for those around me and the work I do. What I wrote next, came out in a way I hadn’t expected.
“I’ve been reflecting on what it means to stay grounded in myself while holding space for others. This work asks me to stay rooted, protected, and present…especially when clients bring in their own chaos or intense energy. I trust that I’m here for a reason, with the people I’m meant to sit with. My job isn’t to merge with their energy or lose myself in the process, but to stay in my body, stay connected to my own center, and meet them from that place. I will continue to stay with me, so I can be here for them.”
(Notice how I said here for them, not there for them.)
That’s when I started reflecting on what happens to our energy when we say to someone, “I’m there for you.”
That phrase “I’m there for you” unknowingly pulls our energy outward. It places us over there, with them, instead of in ourselves. We give our energy away without realizing it. And honestly? That’s exhausting.
But when I say, “I’m here for you,” I’m saying something completely different. I’m saying I’m planted. I’m rooted. I’m in my body. And if you want my support, I’m here, in myself, open to you.
That’s what I mean by that. Don’t give your energy away so easily.
I am here.
I am here.
I am here.
How many times have you said to someone, “I’m there for you,” or “I’ll be there for you if something happens”?
Notice how that feels in your body.
But how would it feel to shift that? To stay in your body, in your presence, in your groundedness and say, “I’m here for you” instead?
Staying within ourselves. Returning to the body. Remembering the place we actually live from. Because everything around us is constantly trying to pull us out of ourselves. Every interaction, every expectation, every story we’ve absorbed about who we’re supposed to be…it all tugs at our center.
But the real work, the lifelong lesson, is learning how to stay here. To stay in our own energy. To stay in our own presence. To stay in the truth of our own experience while the world keeps spinning and people keep needing and life keeps “lifeing.”
So there is your invitation.
To be here. Not there. Here.
