The Grief I Didn’t See Coming

As I packed up my office last week to prepare for the office move, I noticed alongside the excitement was a big ol’bag of heaviness. I couldn’t shake it for a couple days and I couldn’t figure out what it was. Then it dawned on me. Grief. (Confusing, right? Why would I be grieving at a time where I am growing).

At first I was frustrated with myself that I was feeling sad. Sad instead of excited, happy. I thought moving my office would feel like progress, momentum, the next right step. And it is all of those things, but it’s also something very tender I just didn’t anticipate.

I was talking to a very wise friend about this feeling. She said something that hit hard.

“How could you not be grieving? That space was the start of everything for you. It represents growth, attunement, alignment, and healing. Not just for you, but for everyone you held there. It represents freedom from the past. It holds so many warm, empowering things… so, of course leaving it feels like a loss.”

She was right. There’s a version of me who built Blossoming Souls in its current home; the one who took risks, trusted her intuition, and created something out of nothing. She lived inside that room (no, not literally). She breathed there. She grew there. And in some ways, I think maybe she’s the one I’m grieving.

I have been reminded these last couple of weeks as I have prepared for the move that transitions often have a way of stirring up old layers. For me it was an identity shift that reminded me I am always evolving. My attachment to safety that makes leaving the space feel complicated.

I have been reminded that grief isn’t only for endings. It’s also for beginnings that require us to say goodbye to something familiar.

Growth doesn’t only stretch us forward, it often forces us to see (and hopefully honor) what we’re stepping away from. So as I move into my new office space, I am bringing gratitude for the space and experience that shaped me, the clients who trusted me in our space, and the part of myself who made it possible. She isn’t being left behind. She will become part of the foundation I will stand on as I step into what’s next.
